What is the Boxleiter method?

In 2014, developer Simon Carless popularized an observation from Mike Boxleiter: the number of Steam reviews a game gets is roughly 1–5% of total copies sold. Inverting this gives a multiplier of x20 to x80: a game with 500 reviews has likely sold 10,000–40,000 copies.

Conservative

Older games (2+ years), niche genres, high-engagement communities. Horror and visual novel audiences review at higher rates.

Optimistic

Casual games, mobile ports, large silent player bases (free-to-play, early access exits). These audiences buy but rarely review.
